Inclusion & Wellbeing
We believe all our people should feel included and comfortable working here. And we do everything we can to make sure they do. Our aim is to create an environment where our colleagues, whatever their role, are able to grow, thrive, and be all they can be.
We’ve always been ahead of the curve when it comes to offering equality of opportunity. For example, we launched a pioneering project which staffed our Macclesfield store entirely with people over the age of 50 in 1989. And our commitment to equality goes far beyond age.
We promote inclusion, fairness, and respect by encouraging equality and diversity and eliminating unlawful discrimination for all. We respect and celebrate differences. And we’re proactive when it comes to removing discrimination in any of our policies, processes, or ways of working.

Flexible working with Timewise
Work/life balance is important for wellbeing. Wherever possible, we’re flexible about time off and working patterns. We work with Timewise to make sure we’re getting flexible working right. And we’ve joined the Moving Up in Retail programme – an initiative focused on making it possible for people who work flexibly to progress in their careers.
Recruiting with Pluss
Pluss is an award-winning Social Enterprise that helps thousands of people with disabilities and other disadvantages to move into employment each year. With over 45 years of experience, they deliver a range of nationally and locally procured employment programmes on behalf of the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), ESF, Big Lottery Fund, Local Authorities and the NHS. You can find out more by visiting: (https://www.pluss.org.uk/)
It’s important to us that everyone gets the chance to be all they can be. That’s why we’re working with Pluss in our South West region to create a future we’re all part of. We’ve had a great response already and are hoping to expand our partnership in 2019.
Our Partnership with Stonewall
In October 2018, B&Q partnered with Stonewall, the UK’s leading LGBT rights charity, who champion inclusion without exception. We’re looking forward to some great projects with them in 2019. Explore Stonewall’s work on their website: (https://www.stonewall.org.uk)
Here at B&Q, we care for our people and offer a range of tools to aid wellbeing. This includes providing advice and support to all colleagues via our in-house teams and through expert external partners such as: Remploy, Shelter, Macmillan, Samaritans, and Mind. Our employee relations team also offer support with financial worries, flexible working options, and caring for yourself.
Our Everyday Working Life
We encourage our colleagues to support each other and work together as one, every day. To make sure everyone feels they have a space to open up and be themselves, we’ve created Yammer groups where colleagues can share stories on topics that matter to them, such as LGBTQ+, wellbeing, disability, inclusion, and even pets!
But there’s plenty more to do. With the help of our customers and colleagues, we’ll continue to make B&Q a good home for everyone.
