We’ve always been ahead of the curve when it comes to offering equality of opportunity. For example, we launched a pioneering project which staffed our Macclesfield store entirely with people over the age of 50 in 1989. And our commitment to equality goes far beyond age.

Supporting our ex-armed forces
The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly. We actively support the recruitment of ex-armed forces individuals, and do all we can to support their careers and wellbeing in our workplace. This includes supporting reservists and armed forces volunteers.

With over 45 years of experience, they deliver a range of nationally and locally procured employment programmes on behalf of the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), ESF, Big Lottery Fund, Local Authorities and the NHS. It’s important to us that everyone gets the chance to be all they can be. That’s why we’re working with Pluss in our South West region to create a future we’re all part of. We’ve had a great response already and are hoping to expand our partnership in 2019.
Our Partnership with Stonewall
Stonewall are the UK’s leading LGBT rights charity, who champion inclusion without exception. In October 2018, B&Q became a Stonewall Diversity Champion, and in December 2019 we were awarded our first Rainbow Honours Award (runners up) for ‘Start-up LGBTQ Network of the Year’. We’re looking forward to some more great projects with Stonewall in 2020.

Here at B&Q, we care for our people and offer a range of tools to aid wellbeing. This includes providing advice and support to all colleagues via our in-house teams and through expert external partners such as: Remploy, Shelter, Macmillan, Samaritans, and Mind. Our employee relations team also offer support with financial worries, flexible working options, and caring for yourself.
Our Everyday Working Life
We encourage our colleagues to support each other and work together as one, every day. To make sure everyone feels they have a space to open up and be themselves, we’ve created Yammer groups where colleagues can share stories on topics that matter to them, such as LGBTQ+, wellbeing, disability, inclusion, and even pets!
But there’s plenty more to do. With the help of our customers and colleagues, we’ll continue to make B&Q a good home for everyone.
