Management Capability Manager
Permanent
c£60,000 Depending on experience + Bonus + Pension + PMI + ShareSave + 6.6 weeks holiday + Hybrid Working (3 days a week in the office)

The Management Capability Manager makes sure our managers have the skills, confidence and behaviours to lead high-performing teams and role model B&Q’s behaviours. They design and deliver clear development and talent programmes that build leadership and management capability, strengthen our succession pipeline, and support an inclusive, high-performance culture. By using data and insight, and working with internal and external partners, they create development that is practical, a great experience for learners and most importantly that drive real shifts in leadership effectiveness across B&Q.
Key responsibilities
1. Build Management Capability & Succession
- In-role development programmes: Own and continuously improve the Leadership Series ensuring programmes are practical, business-focused, and embedded through operational delivery
- Stepping Up talent programmes: Design and deliver the Stepping Up series as B&Q’s core management talent pathway, strengthening succession pipelines and ensuring diversity and inclusion.
- Maintain and strengthen SSO coverage, and lead the redesign and launch of retail programmes in 2026, in partnership with the Talent Manager to align with career pathways and capability needs.
2. Embed High-Performance Culture
- Equip managers with the core skills of great leadership that underpin a high-performance culture including coaching, feedback for growth, goal setting and performance management.
- Strengthen the feedback culture by embedding the philosophy’s and habits of ‘feedback for growth’
- Act as a consultant to leaders during organisational change and other strategic projects.
3. Deliver Great Learning & Experiences
- Design and curate a progressive learner experience, using adult learning best practice across face-to-face, digital, experiential and peer-to-peer learning.
- Manage nominations and use systems to enable a seamless learner journey, transparent access and clear communication.
- Balance internal and external delivery models, managing providers to ensure quality, value for money, and alignment with B&Q’s leadership culture.
4. Measure Impact & Drive Improvement
- Evaluate the ROI and outcomes of management programmes, linking them to leadership effectiveness, succession health, performance and engagement, in partnership with the talent manager.
- Scan external trends and bring fresh insight to continuously improve our management development approach.
- Partner with comms/marketing to position and promote the management capability offer.
5. Team Leadership & Contribution to Leadership Values & Behaviours
- Lead, coach and develop the Management Capability team with clear accountabilities and performance expectations.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive and high-performing team culture.
- Support career development and progression within the team, building future capability for the function.
- Play an active role as part of the Talent & Learning leadership team, role-modelling B&Q’s behaviours and contributing to shared priorities.
Required skills & experience
- Proven experience in leadership and management development in a large, multi-site business.
- Track record of designing and delivering management and leadership programmes with measurable business impact.
- Strong knowledge of adult learning and leadership development best practice, including blended and experiential learning approaches.
- Experience influencing senior stakeholders and embedding management capability frameworks.
- Proven ability to manage external partners and balance internal/external delivery models.
- Strong data and evaluation skills, translating insight into ROI and business outcomes.
- Experience leading and developing a specialist team.
Desirable:
- CIPD Level 7 or equivalent experience in leadership development.
- Coaching accreditation (e.g. ILM, EMCC, ICF).
- Facilitation or psychometric accreditation (e.g. Insights, MBTI).

B&Q House has a biomass boiler, solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system. Our building also makes use of upcycled and recycled furniture and fittings, and features natural ventilation, heat retention and CO2 management, all via our very own weather station on the roof.
