of B&Q
B&Q in the 60s
Block and Quayle opened their first store in Portswood Road, Southampton in 1969 in a disused cinema. The name was shortened to B&Q.
B&Q in the 70s
B&Q grew to meet demand for homes that reflected groovy new tastes, reaching 26 stores by the end of the decade.
B&Q in the 80s
Everything grew in the 80s: hair, shoulder pads, B&Q’s product range and B&Q’s stores. We bought DIY chain Dodge City and became part of the Kingfisher Group.
B&Q in the 90s
We merged with France's leading DIY retailer, Castorama, to become the largest DIY retailer in Europe, and began opening for business on Sundays.
B&Q in the 2000s
We launched www.diy.com so that customers could buy bricks (and more) with just a few clicks. With environmental responsibility in mind, we developed our sustainability programme, One Planet Home.
2010 & beyond
The way customers shop, use their homes and live their lives continues to evolve, and we continue to bring customers brilliant solutions that are innovative and sustainable.
